Sex magick is a powerful practise that has been used for centuries to tap into the deepest and most primal parts of the human psyche. It is often a taboo subject that can be shrouded in secrecy and mystery. However, as people become more interested in exploring their spiritual and sexual sides, the practise of sex magick has the potential for a resurgence, if it hasn’t already. But with great power comes great responsibility, and practitioners of sex magick should always consider the ethical implications of their actions. In this article, we will dip a tentative toe into the world of sex magick and discuss some of the ethical considerations that should be taken into account when practising this powerful form of magick. From consent and boundaries to the use of energy and intention, we will examine some of the ethics of sex magick that one should follow to ensure that sex magick is practised in a safe and responsible manner. So, if you’re ready to go beyond the taboo and explore the world of sex magick, read on. But not on your work laptop, yeah?

What is sex magick?

In its simplest form, sex magick is a practise that involves the use of sexual energy to achieve a particular goal. This can involve anything from manifesting abundance to connecting with a higher power. However, as we’ve mentioned, with the use of sexual energy comes a huge responsibility so practitioners of sex magick must consider the ethical implications of their actions and ensure that they are not causing harm to themselves or others.

Understanding the ethics of sex magick

In the practise of sex magick, it is important to distinguish sex as a physical act and the energetic “magickal” exchange. This is because sex magick is using the energy that is generated during sexual activity so that it can be harnessed and directed towards a particular goal. It’s not about a race to the good bit and as with any form of intimate touching, the energy exchange must be consensual and based on mutual respect and trust.

Additionally, it is important for practitioners of sex magick to consider the historical context to some of these practises. It’s not unfair to say that in the 19th Century, a lot of rich White men took it upon themselves to travel around the world and bring back cultural practise from wherever they went. Including ideas connected with sex magick.

These are just some of the ethics of sex magick to be taken into account before one practises.

The importance of consent in sex magick

As we’ve stated, consent is a fundamental principle of any sexual activity, and this is especially true in the practise of sex magick. In order for the energy exchange to be effective, it must be consensual and based on mutual trust and respect. Practitioners of sex magick must ensure that they have the full and informed consent of their partner(s) before engaging in any sexual activity.

Then the next step is ensuring your partner is giving consent for the act to form part of a magickal ritual or practise. Just because someone consents to one act or activity does not mean that they have given blanket consent for everything. It is important to remember that giving consent is an ongoing process. It needs to be obtained for all future activities. Practitioners must ensure that they are continually checking in with their partner(s) to ensure that they are comfortable and consenting to each new activity.

Additionally, it is important to recognise that consent can be withdrawn at any time. If a partner expresses discomfort or withdraws consent, then the practitioner must respect their wishes and discontinue the activity. Failure to do so can result in harm to both the partner(s) and the practitioner.

The role of power dynamics in sex magick

Power dynamics can play a significant role in the practise of sex magick. This can be especially true in situations where one partner has more experience or knowledge of the practise than the other. It is important for practitioners to recognise and address any power imbalances that may exist and ensure that the energy exchange is based on mutual respect and trust, and please remember, it is not gatekeeping to protect your partner from practises they are not ready for

Additionally, it is important to ensure that the use of power dynamics is not being used to manipulate or harm another person. The use of sexual energy to control or dominate another person can be extremely harmful and should be avoided. Practitioners must ensure that they are using their knowledge and experience of sex magick to empower and uplift their partner(s), not to harm them.

Addressing cultural appropriation in sex magick

The practise of sex magick can involve the use of symbols, practises, or rituals from a culture that is not one’s own. This can be an incredibly difficult and complex issue that goes well beyond sex magick. Magickal practitioners must always be aware of the potential harm that can result from cultural appropriation in magick, including sex magick. It is important to ensure that practitioners understand the cultural context to what they are doing, and any practises or rituals carefully considered from that perspective.

We would urge all practitioners to understand the history and significance of these practises and to ensure that they are not being used in a way that is disrespectful or harmful to the culture from which they originated.

Navigating the intersection of sexuality and spirituality

The practise of sex magick often involves the intersection of sexuality and spirituality. This can be a powerful and transformative experience, but it can also be challenging to navigate. Practitioners must be aware of the potential emotional and spiritual consequences of their actions and ensure that they are not causing harm to themselves or others. This connects back into our comments about consent, especially when practitioners are exploring sexuality alongside the spiritual aspect with their partner(s).

Practitioners may also wish to be aware of any potential conflicts between their spiritual beliefs and their sexual desires. It is important to ensure that these two aspects of oneself are in alignment and not in conflict. Asking oneself about this and reflecting back is important to do away from any potential partner(s). This can be done simply through examining your own beliefs and values and ensuring that they are in line with any potential actions.

Embracing ethical considerations in the practise of sex magick

In sex magick, it is not merely about a physical act, but a powerful energetic exchange to channel towards a goal. So while this article may seem like a long list of things not to do, sex magick can be pleasurable and transformative. But it is more important to ensure that this pleasure does not come at the expense of another person’s well-being. Embracing the ethics of sex magick should not detract from the magickal experience, only make you a better practitioner.

Afterall, practitioners must always be aware of the potential consequences of their actions and ensure that they are not causing harm to themselves or others. That’s what makes you a great magickal person. In sex magick, this can mean setting clear boundaries, checking in with partner(s) regularly, and being aware of any potential physical or emotional harm that may result from the practise, including any potential cultural appropriation that may be involved in the practise of sex magick.

And finally, as with any kind of sex, practise sex magick safely please people, and we mean that in all senses of the word.
