The Power of Mercury: How to Incorporate this Planet into Your Magickal Practise

We specialise in astral magick, which basically means the rules we like to follow come from using the movements of the planets and where they are in the sky at any given moment.

In astrology, it is believed that the planets have a direct effect on the human psyche and that each planet possesses its own characteristics, strengths and weaknesses. Astral magick is based on astrology. It uses the characteristics and strengths of the planets that come from astrology as a source of power. As a result, each planet has its own set of positive and negative uses in magickal practices.

To understand how each planet can be used for magick, it’s important to first learn about their individual meanings. We’ve posted about using Mars and Saturn, Venus and Jupiter in a magickal context previously. We’ve also posted about using the outer planets, as well as the Sun and the Moon. Now, we will round this series off by briefly introducing you to Mercury, the fastest planet, as it relates to magick.

Understanding Mercury’s astrological and mythological influence

Mercury is the planet closest to the Sun and is named after the Roman god of the same name. In Roman mythology, Mercury was the messenger of the gods and was often depicted as a swift and nimble god. He was also associated with commerce, trickery, and magick. In astrology, Mercury is linked to communication, intelligence, and mental agility. It is the planet that rules over the signs Gemini and Virgo. Gemini is associated with communication and the exchange of ideas, while Virgo is linked to analytical and critical thinking. It’s these characteristics that are pulled upon for magickal work.

The power of Mercury in magick

Mercury, as the planet of communication, intellect and mysticism, has energy that is believed to enhance our personal impact and improve mental clarity. This means Mercury’s power can be used magickally in spells associated with learning, collaboration, influencing others and for smoothing over any interpersonal issues through a charm offensive.

How to harness the power of Mercury in magick

The key to harnessing the power of Mercury is to focus and direct the energies in a specific way. That means Mercury can only really provide you with magickal energy associated with communication, mental tasks, team building, creative thinking, finding answers quickly and so on. These energies can certainly be pulled into spell work for things like successful projects or building relationships, you just have to be mindful with what you’re asking Mercury to do. For example, Mercury is a great source of energy for team work and if you need success by relying on other people to get you there, Mercury is perfect for this.

Think about how to draw upon Mercury’s energy when setting your intentions. Work on the day of Mercury, which is Wednesday or use planetary seals or other symbols that represent Mercury in your magickal rituals. You can do this by carving glyphs or seals onto candles or parchment. You can also use the associated planetary herbs as ingredients in your spell work.

Things to remember when working with Mercury in magick

We’d be a bit remiss if we didn’t mention Mercury’s retrograde. A retrograde is a period when the planet appears to be moving backward in the sky, and all planets have periods of retrograde but Mercury, being the fastest moving planet, has them more often. The Mercury retrograde is often associated with miscommunication, electronic malfunctions, and other issues related to communication and technology. However, it can also be a time when you can tap into the energy of Mercury and focus on improving your communication skills and mental clarity. For example, by working with Mercury’s retrograde energy, you can perform magick that focuses on releasing negative patterns and blocks that are holding you back.

Incorporating the power of Mercury into your magickal practice can enhance your mental abilities, improve your communication skills, and promote creativity. By understanding the astrological and mythological influence of Mercury, you can tap into the energy of this planet and unlock its mystical powers.
