We specialise in astral magick, which basically means the rules we like to follow come from using the movements of the planets and where they are in the sky at any given moment. Over the next two weeks, we will look at how to incorporate the characteristics of certain planets into magickal practise.
In astrology, it is believed that the planets have a direct effect on the human psyche and that each planet possesses its own characteristics, strengths and weaknesses. Astral magick is based on astrology. It uses the characteristics and strengths of the planets that come from astrology as a source of power. As a result, each planet has its own set of positive and negative uses in magickal practise.
To understand how each planet can be used for magick, it’s important to first learn about their individual meanings. This week we will briefly introduce you to Mars and Saturn, the so-called malefics, as they relate to magick.
Mars in Magick
We know from astrology that Mars is the ruling planet of the star sign Aries, which is the first sign of the Zodiac. In astrology, Mars is known as the ‘lesser malefic’. It is said to drive our more animalistic instincts and sometimes our more aggressive tendencies. However, in astral magick it is viewed in a more positive light. This planet is often associated with courage, strength and action. In magick, Mars is often used to increase energy, strength and courage. It is also believed that the energy of Mars can be used magickally for protection.
Saturn in Magick
Saturn is the ruling planet of Capricorn, which is the tenth sign of the Zodiac. In astrology, Saturn is known as the ‘greater malefic’. It is said to represent limitations. However, in astral magick this planet is often associated more with structure and discipline. In magick, Saturn is often used to increase focus, discipline and self-control. It is also believed that the energy of Saturn can be used to bind and constrict, which is useful in banishing magick.
How to use Mars in Magick
There are several ways to use the energy of Mars in magick. For example, to increase strength in a spell Mars can increase personal will power or personal strength in a spell. This can be especially useful when you need an extra boost of power to complete – or kick start – a particularly difficult task or project.
You can also use Mars to increase personal energy. This can be helpful when you need a boost of vitality or the energy to take charge of a situation.
Mars can also be used magickally for conflict resolution. Perhaps a form of binding or banishing, but also as a boost in confidence to bring an issue to a head.
How to use Saturn in Magick
There are several ways to use the energy of Saturn in magick. For example, Saturn’s power can be particularly useful to increase self-control through self-binding spells. These can be useful if you’re kicking a difficult habit.
Saturn can also be used magickally to increase focus. This can be especially useful for magick in support of projects or work that requires a lot of discipline and when the power of the mind is required to accomplish a particular task.
The energy of Saturn is also useful magickally speaking for taking responsibility for one’s actions. For example in magick involving a call to action or when following the rules is what is needed the most by way of an outcome.
Things to remember when using Mars and Saturn in magick
Mars and Saturn, when thinking about their astrological associations, are oftentimes a bit feared. But in magick, their characteristics are two of the most helpful planets. Like the other planets, Mars and Saturn are best used when they are in their own signs. For example, if you’re trying to use the energy of Mars, it’s best to do it when Mars is in Aries. Similarly, if you’re trying to use the energy of Saturn, it’s best to do it when Saturn is in Capricorn.
When it comes to creating spells, the best way to harness the energies of Mars and Saturn is to incorporate their characteristics right into the spell. You can do this by using their planetary glyphs, for example carved on candles. You can make use of their planetary days of the week. For Mars this is Tuesday and Saturn’s is Saturday. You can also use their associated planetary herbs as ingredients.
