How to get started with magick

Are you curious about magick and the potential it holds for manifesting your goals? Magick is becoming increasingly popular among modern practitioners, spiritual leaning people and even business executives who are looking to make lasting changes in their lives. So if you’re ready to get started, let’s just go through the basics.

What is magick?

Magick is the art of creating change through intention and action, this means it is not like Hollywood where things manifest instantly and (sadly!) it isn’t a substitute for hard work.

We believe that magick is the philosophy and art of affecting intended change through unseen causes and that magick can be used in all aspects of your life, from achieving your career goals to improving your relationships with loved ones. The “art” behind magick can be as simple as lighting a candle and setting an intention for what you would like to manifest, or it can be as complex as performing a full ritual. The “philosophy” bit is also worth spending some time on, what is it you actually believe? What is it you’re trying to achieve? You’ll soon spot that oftentimes it’s all down to personal preference.

Getting started with magick

We posted an article about definitions in magick that gives some of the basics about various words that are used to describe magickal practise or magickal objects.

We mentioned earlier that you might want to bring in a central philosophy to your new lifestyle. It’s not the case that all magick is Wicca or Paganism (or any other magick based religion). Magick can form part of a religious practice, but it doesn’t have to. Deities can be called upon and worshipped, or not. It’s up to you. There is no one right way, which can make things incredibly freeing (but it can also be incredibly confusing when you’re just starting out!)

This means there are lots of different practices out there and lots of different types of practitioners. Some you’ll notice align quite nicely with your central belief system, eg your philosophy, and some less so. The same goes for the “art” behind the magick you practise. Our magick is very astral based, so the “art” behind our magick means working with planets and star signs. This isn’t for everybody though, and that’s fine. It’s all down to personal preference.

Which brings us onto the next key place to getting started with magick…research!

Researching magick

If you’re new to magick, it’s so important to do your research, so you can make an informed decision on the type of magick you want to practise. By the way, it’s ok to change your mind and pick a different one later!

We say this because not all magickal practise is open to just anyone. And that is a good thing (we have an article about being a keymaster if you’re keen to learn about this. It’s a whole thing). So research is so important before practising.

One way to research magick is to explore different blogs, books, and websites. So we’re happy that you’ve found your way here, just make sure you’re reading up on those different types of magick, so you can see which one resonates with you the most.

You can also explore different groups on social media, such as Facebook groups and Discord channels, where you can talk to people who are already practising magick. Just take care out there, of course. The Internet is a weird place sometimes!

When are you officially a magickal practitioner?

Well, we’d suggest this is once you’ve identified which type of magick is right for you and you’ve started your research. Telling people about your new practise is also a personal choice. We have some tips on keeping things on the DL if you’re not ready.

But if you do want to be more open about it, you can certainly feel more like a magickal practitioner by creating your magick space. This can be any special place where you practise your magick. It might be a whole room in your house or just a corner of one room. Perhaps it’s a virtual space. It’s entirely up to you.

You absolutely do not need to spend money on making a space look magickal. We’d suggest you really only need four things when getting started with magick. These can all be boiled down into a positive mindset and a sense of ownership and belief in what you are doing (eg how your art and your philosophy are used to deliver your outcomes).

Which brings us on to how you can feel that sense of ownership.

Practising magick regularly and remain open

We mentioned before that magick is not a substitute for doing the work and nor does it happen in a quick or easy manner. It is a practise that requires patience, perseverance, and dedication.

It’s important to remember that magick is a two-way street, meaning that while you are working towards manifesting your goals, the Universe (or insert your own source of power here!) is also working to bring those goals to fruition. This means that patience and consistency are crucial if we want  to bring about successful results.

It can be easy to get frustrated and discouraged when you first start practising magick, as it often takes time to see results. Just remember, patience is key. It’s important to remain open to receiving the outcomes you desire, even if they do not happen in the way you expect. In fact, we’d go so far as to say don’t worry about “how” the thing will get here. If you’ve been practising magick for a while and have yet to see results, you may have accidentally set up a barrier by worrying about the “how” that could be blocking your results.

Finding a mentor or community

Finally to get started with magick you can also invest in some training. Naturally, we’d love it if you wanted us to teach you about astral magick but there are other types of magick, and other schools.

If you want to take your chosen practice to the next level and master the art of magick, it can be helpful to find a mentor, teacher or even just a community of like minded magickal people that can guide you along the way. Just make sure you find a teacher or group that aligns with your goals and your philosophy.
