Although for a lot of the magickal community, the Moon is by far the most used celestial body, the Sun also has ‘characteristics’ that are useful in magick.
Celebrate the Solstice in both hemispheres
A Solstice is a celebration of what the Sun is up to. For Northerners, the 21st December is a midwinter festival and from this point in time, the days will start to get longer. This means it is a celebration of the ‘return of the light’ and is a good time of year for connecting with the stillness of nature.
For Southerners, this time of year is the Midsummer festival. It is the turning point at which the sun reaches its height and shines for the longest. It is also the time of year to accept the “waning of the light” as the sun begins its time of decline. It is a good time of year for enjoying the fullness of the sun’s light or watching a sunset.
How to celebrate the Solstice
We can use the Solstice to celebrate the changing of the seasons, and bask in all the beauty of the natural environment. We can also use the ‘characteristics’ of the Sun as a symbol representing “the self”. For example, we can use this time of year to check in with ourselves, either by working on our mental health and/or on our positivity.
New Year, New You?
Practising meditation is a great way to start when looking to create a positive mindset and bring your focus inwards. Meditation has some amazing benefits such as reducing rumination or clearing away any emotional baggage we’ve spent the best part of 2022 carrying around with us.
For those who celebrate the end of one year and the start of the new year in December, this is the time of year when thoughts turn to what comes next. The Sun is just finishing its journey through Sagittarius around the 21st of December. Sagittarius symbolises all that is philosophical and adventurous. Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, the planet of adventure, so thoughts might turn towards what 2023 might bring and you may wish to think about goal setting.
Use this time to think about a situation you would like to change or a goal you have, create a vision board representing these changes, make sure you include ‘what good looks like’ so you will recognise the change when it has happened!
You can also look to Tarot to guide you with this new year spread, if you’re not sure where your personal development goals lay over the next 12 months.
