What Is Humanistic Magick?
Humanistic Magick is a psychology-informed framework that integrates reflective therapeutic tools with symbolic and ritual practices to support meaningful, lasting personal change. It blends:
- Humanistic psychology (self-worth, agency, growth)
- Evidence-based techniques (journalling, reframing, guided visualisation)
- Intentional symbolic practice (ritual, tarot, affirmations, archetypes)
It is about consciously participating in your own transformation rather than bypassing reality.
Why Use Humanistic Magick?
Before we explore how to use Humanistic Magick, it is worth asking a deeper question:
Why would you want to?
Many spiritually curious people eventually reach a quiet tension point. They may believe in energy, intention, or symbolism and feel drawn to tarot, meditation, ritual, or manifestation and yet they also want something grounded, credible, psychologically sound. Many spiritually minded people just like you don’t want to abandon psychology or counselling in order to grow but they don’t want to abandon their spirituality either.
Humanistic Magick exists precisely in that space. The why of Humanistic Magick is simple. It is because change feels more sustainable when it honours both your psychology and your spirit. Because transformation deepens when you understand yourself, rather than trying to override yourself. Because healing is more powerful when it feels intentional, not accidental. And healing your whole self includes your spiritual side.
Humanistic Magick is not about escaping reality. It is about engaging with it consciously.
The Psychological Foundation: Change With Agency
Humanistic psychology, drawing from thinkers such as Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow, centres on the idea that human beings have an innate drive toward growth and self-actualisation.
This means you are definitely not broken. You are not in need of fixing and you are capable of development when provided with reflection, safety, and intention.
In therapeutic contexts, research on expressive writing (such as the work of James Pennebaker) shows that structured reflection can improve wellbeing and emotional processing. Ritual research (such as integrative reviews in psychology) suggests that symbolic actions can help regulate emotion and increase a sense of control.
In other words reflection creates insight, ritual creates embodiment and intention creates direction.
Humanistic magick combines these three elements.
The “How To” of Humanistic Magick
The humanistic magick framework can be used in response to a specific presenting issue such as stress, low confidence, relationship tension, feeling stuck, leadership challenges, or life transitions. For example
Clarify the Presenting Issue: Rather than asking, “How do I manifest something better?”
Humanistic magick asks “What am I actually experiencing?”, “What emotion sits underneath this?” or “What belief might be shaping this pattern?”
This stage is reflective and therapeutic. It might include journalling, using tarot cards, guided questioning, or coaching dialogue.
Reframe With Psychological Insight: Next comes gentle cognitive reframing. Asking what is within your control? What assumption might be outdated? What strength are you overlooking?
By doing this you are not pretending a difficulty doesn’t exist, instead you are choosing how to relate to it.
Anchor Change With Symbolic Practise: Here is where the “magick” becomes intentional. Symbolic action could include a written affirmation crafted from your reframed belief, a tarot reflection to externalise perspective, a guided visualisation to embody the future self or a simple ritual marking the decision to shift.
Psychologically, ritual works because it signals transition, reduces uncertainty and increases perceived agency and spiritually speaking, ritual feels like alignment.
Humanistic magick holds both interpretations simultaneously without forcing you to choose.
Why This Bridge Matters
For spiritually minded people who are also psychologically discerning, this bridge can feel like relief.
You no longer have to choose between therapy and mysticism, you don’t need to feel naïve for believing in symbolism nor feel like it’s cheating for wanting evidence.
Humanistic magick allows you to say “I can understand the psychology of this, and still treat it as meaningful.” It honours your scepticism in those moments when you feel like giving up, it honours your intuition and most importantly, it honours your agency.
When Applied to a Real Issue
Let’s imagine you are struggling with self doubt. Traditional therapy might explore your core beliefs, your past experiences or any cognitive distortions. Traditional spiritual practise might suggest you try some affirmations, manifestation rituals or energy clearing.
Humanistic magick would integrate both by explore the origin of the belief, reframe it using evidence and compassion, and where it speaks to you, create a ritual or symbolic anchor that embodies a new belief.
For example, after identifying the belief “I am not capable,” you might reframe this as “I am developing my competence through experience.” Then create a small ritual such as lighting a candle, reciting the statement aloud or writing about it in your journal. Then visualise acting from this belief tomorrow.
Is that psychology?
Is that spirituality?
It is both.
And that integration is the point.
The Deeper “Why”
The deeper reason to use humanistic magick is not to replace your existing beliefs. It is to feel integrated. When parts of you are at war, maybe this is logic versus intuition, evidence versus meaning your personal growth becomes fragmented.
When those parts are allowed to collaborate, change becomes coherent. Humanistic Magick supports your growing self-trust, intentional growth, your emotional regulation, your meaning-making and your personal agency. It does not ask you to suspend disbelief. It invites you to participate in your own evolution.
