We specialise in astral magick, which basically means the rules we like to follow come from using the movements of the planets and where they are in the sky at any given moment.
We have posted previously about timing magick using astrology but this week we wanted to get into it a bit with the astrological house system, and how we use that. For example, each house in astrology has its own unique energy that can be harnessed to enhance your magickal practice. In this article, we’ll explore the basics (and we do mean basics!) of the astrological houses and how you can use them to enhance your magickal work.
Understanding the significance of each Astrological House
Astrological houses refers to twelve divisions of the zodiac, each representing a different area of our lives. It’s basically a place in the sky and when the stuff and things that move through this spot, this house, is what matters. The houses are numbered from one to twelve, and they go around the Earth like a kind of wheel starting with the house of the self in the East, just below the horizon. The house of balance, house number 7, is positioned in the West just above the horizon and the whole wheel ends with the house of sacrifice back in the East again.
Each house is associated with a particular sign of the zodiac, and a ruling planet, and has its own unique energy and correspondences. Its how these things combine together that make our astral magickal practise work.
The first house, also known as the ascendant, represents the self, our physical appearance, and our approach to life. It is ruled by Aries and is a good house to focus on for spells and rituals related to personal development, how you see yourself, and taking charge.
The second house is associated with nice things like money, possessions, and material resources. It is ruled by the sign of Taurus and can be a good house to focus on for spells and rituals related to your valuables, financial abundance and stability.
The third house is associated with communication and learning new things. It is ruled by the sign of Gemini and can be a good house to focus on for spells and rituals related to improving communication or book-learning and developing skills.
The fourth house represents the home, family, and emotional security. It is ruled by the sign of Cancer and can be a good house to focus on for spells and rituals related to creating a peaceful and harmonious home environment.
The fifth house is associated with creative self-expression and socialising. It is ruled by the sign of Leo and can be a good house to focus on for spells and rituals related to artistic endeavours or increasing your social circle.
The sixth house represents health and work. It is ruled by the sign of Virgo and can be a good house to focus on for spells and rituals related to improving health, work based training or finding work.
The seventh house is associated with partnerships, marriage, and business contracts. It is ruled by the sign of Libra and can be a good house to focus on for spells and rituals related to attracting a romantic partner or improving a business partnership.
The eighth house represents transformations, the cycle of death and rebirth and other people’s money like taxes. It is ruled by the sign of Scorpio and can be a good house to focus on for spells and rituals related to transformation, changing and improving, and personal growth.
The ninth house is associated with higher education, travel, and spirituality. It is ruled by the sign of Sagittarius and can be a good house to focus on for spells and rituals related to expanding your horizons through travel or education.
The tenth house represents career, your public image, and authority. It is ruled by the sign of Capricorn and can be a good house to focus on for spells and rituals related to career success, gaining recognition for your work and how the world sees you.
The eleventh house is associated with blessings like social connections, friendships, and group activities. It is ruled by the sign of Aquarius and can be a good house to focus on for spells and rituals related to building social connections or networking.
The twelfth house represents the subconscious, dreams, and hidden aspects of the self. It is ruled by the sign of Pisces and can be a good house to focus on for spells and rituals related to exploring the depths of your inner self and your spirituality.
The significance of each House for magickal work
Now we know that each house has its own unique energy and correspondences that can be harnessed for magickal work. For example, if you are looking to improve your financial situation, you may want to focus on what is going on in the second house and work with correspondences associated with Taurus or Venus. This is because these are both “in charge” in the second house and they are strongest here. If you are looking to improve your communication skills, you may want to focus on the third house and work with correspondences associated with Gemini and Mercury and so on.
It is important to note that while each house has its own correspondences, and works better when certain signs and planets are moving through it with similar correspondences, they are also interconnected and can influence each other. You just have to blend their correspondences to make the most of what is happening as signs and planets move through the houses. For example, if you are looking to improve your communication skills to help you work on your relationships, you could focus on the third house or the seventh house, and wait to see when Mercury is passing through either of these houses to get the best outcome.
How to use Astrological Houses to enhance your magickal work
So now we know that the houses are places in the sky that represent different aspects of our lives, and when planets move across the sky they are moving through these houses. When a planet with their own specific characteristics is travelling across the sky in these special positions, it is this that can be used in magickal practise. But how do we know when a planet is moving through a certain bit of the sky? Thankfully we don’t have to use hard astral maths for this, there are apps and websites that can tell you what is going on, you just have to remember to check them! Time Nomad is a great little app for iPhone users to plan magick. It has a lot of astrological information to choose from including what is passing through the houses, but it’s not available on Android.
As Android users, we use Planetary Times which shows the astrological chart data we need.
Cafe Astrology has got loads of little nuggets of information, such as electional astrology and the best times to do stuff for the current month.
Once you notice what planets are moving through which house, the planning of magick becomes really exciting. So as long as you remember to time things just right, and use the energies of the planets as they move through houses you can do anything!
Aligning your intentions with the energy of the Astrological Houses
To work with the energy of the astrological houses, it is important to align your intentions with other correspondences you hold, with the house you want to work with. This can be done through meditation, visualisation, or creating spells that use the words and energies. For example, if you are looking to improve your standing in the world, you may want to meditate on the energy of the tenth house while Saturn, Jupiter, or perhaps Mars, is passing through it, using some herbs connected to these planets.
Maybe for you this also involves colour correspondences such as crystals or candles you connect to how the world sees you, and your standing in the world. You may also want to create a spell to focus on your responsibility, expanding your place or your ability to take charge depending on which planet is moving through the tenth house, using words that correspond with those planetary energies.
