We often use Tarot and Lenormand cards in a therapeutic sense, rather than a fortune telling sense, for personal development, spiritual growth and when faced with a challenge. But what exactly does this mean? How does Tarot card guidance differ from a traditional reading or traditional therapy?
Tarot card guidance vs. Tarot card reading
Tarot card guidance represents a significant departure from more conventional Tarot card reading practises. For example, traditional tarot sessions may see the client begin the session by posing specific questions about their concerns, and then in turn, the cards become central to the session as they are seen to provide the answers.
However, when we practise Tarot card guidance with our clients, this approach is inverted and the Tarot guide (or Tarot counsellor) takes the lead in the questioning process, guiding the session with purposeful and therapeutic enquiries of the client. We do this to help clients uncover deeper insights from within themselves and we make the client the focus of the session. The cards are only used as a tool to reflect insights back.
Tarot card guidance is different again from a traditional reading as oftentimes, a traditional reading will only concentrate on addressing one singular issue that the client brings. Instead, Tarot card guidance adopts a more comprehensive approach. This means that multiple interconnected issues or challenges that the client might be experiencing, can be brought to the surface allowing for a more holistic exploration of the circumstances. This can springboard the client into revelations about themselves that can truly help with healing process.
So why not just go to therapy?
Tarot card guidance vs. Traditional Therapy
To be clear, Tarot guidance is not a replacement for therapy and we would always refer clients with significant needs to traditional therapy. Our wheelhouse is the client who may feel their issues are not serious enough for therapy, or clients who seek therapy for mild problems. We also feel that as traditional therapy primarily centres on enhancing mental wellbeing through psychological approaches, there is a space for Tarot card guidance to take a different path and complement the traditional therapy being used. This is because Tarot card guidance focuses predominantly on spiritual wellbeing and inner growth. It is this spiritual emphasis that creates a unique therapeutic environment that traditional therapy can often leave out.
Traditional therapy often asks clients to go deep into their past experiences, with particular attention paid to childhood events and their lasting impact. Not that these experiences are not important, it is just that Tarot card guidance maintains a strong focus on present experiences and their immediate influence on one’s life circumstances. This means that sometimes people just want to feel more confident, or less stressed, now and Tarot guidance can be a tool to help the client with where to start.
