We often use Tarot and Lenormand cards in a therapeutic sense, rather than a fortune telling sense, for personal development, spiritual growth and when faced with a challenge. In such circumstances we can often feel that our choices are limited. So we have developed a tarot card spread for choices in order to clear away these doubts and take back control.

A Tarot Card Spread For Choices

When we use tarot cards for self-reflection, we tend to avoid “outcome” type interpretations, preferring instead to see choices as actions we can take if that suggestion resonates. This spread is all about choices.

For this tarot card spread for choices you will need a Tarot card deck and at least 15 minutes to give yourself enough time to explore the 5 cards, and their relationship to each other. Whether you use Tarot for self reflection or divination, it is worth having the time to devote to each card and understand not only the meaning in the cards but how they relate to you, and the other cards, in the context of their positions outlined below.

The spread

For this spread you will need to shuffle the deck, selecting 5 cards in a way that resonates with you. You will then place the cards down as follows: 1 card in the centre, one card either side of the centre card. One card above, and one card below the centre card. This should form a shape like a cross:

How to read this Choices Spread

The spread is then read from the centre out, reading both horizontally and vertically. The Horizontal line indicates the actions, and the vertical representing time.

The centre card: This card is card number 1, and represents the issue right now.

The horizontal row: The cards numbered 4 and 5 that make up the horizontal row will represent two choices. More cards can of course be placed to support the interpretations of these two cards.

The vertical row: The cards numbered 2 and 3 represent the history of the issue, and where the issue could be headed. Card 3 can become a simple choice of “do nothing”.

Card number 1 – This is the issue as it appears for you right now. This card is a summary of the main issue. It could be a summary of an event, your feelings, a difficult situation. It might be important to notice if this card is in the reversed position. When we read reversed cards, for us this can mean it’s an internal issue rather than something tangible in the real world.

Card number 2 – This is the history of the issue. This card describes the background, or history to this issue. It may include some clues about the context or the background that may resonate across other areas, especially if the issue is part of a pattern.

Card number 3 –  The first of our Choices. Think of card three as an “inaction” card, and doing nothing is certainly an option. Card three can indicate where the issue could lead if it were left. You may want to consider if the card could be interpreted as a positive instruction to help you learn from the issue (even so-called bad cards can be interpreted as good advice in this position).

Card number 4 – The second of our Choices. This card represents another choice, and is meant to be read as an action to take, if you’re not keen on the message from card three. So it’s not an outcome, more of a choice to undertake a task. You can supplement card four with an extra “outcome” card if you wish.

Card number 5 – The third and final card of our Choices. This card represents another choice, and like card four, is meant to be read as an action to take, not an outcome, and only for you to choose if you’re not seeing workable options from the other two cards. You can also supplement card five with an extra “outcome” card if you wish.

A Tarot Card Spread For Choices

With this tarot card spread for choices, you should see the opportunities opening up for you to choose an action that resonates. Even doing nothing is a choice. We choose to read Tarot for personal development, and not divination, but if you choose to, you can lay on extra cards to find outcomes from your actions cards for yourself if you prefer. So give this tarot card spread for choices a try, and see the opportunities for yourself.
