Guided Meditation: Accepting imperfection

accepting imperfection by Magenta School of Magick

Art by Jemma

Many of us want to achieve perfection in our lives. This might come in the form of the perfect school, job, car, partner, social life and everything else in between. If we reach perfection, oftentimes we believe this will finally make us happier, or give us a sense of acceptance by others. This can come at the cost of burnout, feelings of anxiousness and stress. By allowing a sense of ‘good enough’ to satisfy us, we can learn to enjoy being in the moment and allow gratitude for where we are today creep in.

Filled with affirmations aimed at helping to celebrating how far we’ve come, to learn that setbacks are part of a process and that we’re probably holding ourselves to impossible standards anyway!

Here we have some pointers on how to meditate, plus some of our other guided meditations available.

Meditation practice can produce unwanted effects in people who might be more sensitive. We encourage anyone who is unsure about practising meditative techniques to seek appropriate professional support before experimenting with meditation.

Using planetary seals in magick

Timing magick using astrology is about knowing where the planets are and when by Magenta School of Magick

Magickal seals are a kind of diagram or picture that can be used in a magickal context.

Many magickal seals were documented in ancient grimoires. They can be scribed onto an object such as a talisman (or other magickal object) in order to imbue that object with the power associated with the seal. Sometimes seals are drawn as part of a magickal ritual, perhaps to call upon a deity or other spirit.

So planetary seals, like magickal seals, are a kind of diagram as well…but in order to understand what planetary seals are, and their origin, we have to explain a little bit about planetary (magic) squares.

What are planetary squares?

Planetary squares come from maths, but in maths they are called “magic squares”. Ancient scholars from China to Europe used these magic squares for maths and what struck these scholars was that when all the numbers in the rows, columns and the diagonals were added together, they all added up to the same amount. Hence their magicness.

It was Arabic scholars who first attributed the first 7 magic mathematical squares to the 7 known planets (known at the time) and started using them as part of this talismanic, seal magick.

These magic – or planetary – squares of numbers can be used to create seals and sigils in and of themselves as this article explains. But planetary seals, as diagrams designed to imbue the power of the planet, do exist.

Planetary seals

Each of the 7 known planets have their own seal, but because the outer planets were not known in the middle ages when these seals were created, the outer planets don’t have a planetary square or a planetary seal.

The seal is drawn using the planet’s personal magic square. This means, for example, The Seal of the Sun was originally created using the magic square of the Sun. The Seal of the Moon was originally created using the magic square of the Moon and so on.

It was thought at one time that the seals were orginally drawn by ensuring a line cut across each number, ensuring every number in the magic square was used in the diagram’s creation. Although when people have tested this, it doesn’t look like every single number is used in all the seals, but it is true in some cases.

Planetary seal of the Sun

When this seal (drawn properly, unlike our dodgy Google Docs version!) is placed on its magick square, The Seal of The Sun does indeed overlap every number of the magic square of The Sun.

Using planetary seals in magick

Calling on the power of the appropriate planet is something we do a lot here at Magenta School of Magick. Using planetary seals is a great way to capture the essence of the planet when working with physical objects.

Before getting started though, it’s worth spending a little bit of time understanding the characteristics of the planets before working out which one would suit the magick the most. We have some high level pointers on each planet’s relative characteristics on our Casting Spells page.

After that the rest is easy. The seal is already created, all that needs to happen is for it to be copied onto a talisman, drawn onto your object (such as a candle or piece of paper) or even drawn in chalk on the floor and objects of focus placed onto the seal.

Timing the magick

To ensure the magick is as impactful as possible, cast a chart for the best time to cast your spell using the planetary seal based on factors such as ensuring the planet is travelling along in a suitable star sign, that the magick is being worked at least in the hour of the planet (if not the hour and the day) and that you’ve factored in whatever the Moon is doing.

Guided Meditation: Spotting Patterns

Spotting patterns is formulation in CBT by Magenta School of Magick

Formulation is a technique used in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy that helps to identify where there might be strong links or repeating patterns between thoughts, feelings and behaviours. If we can identify these patterns, there is the potential to work towards a solution based on what those patterns tell us.

For this guided meditation, you could choose to use a pen and some paper to note down any patterns you identify.

Here we have some pointers on how to meditate, plus some of our other guided meditations available.

Meditation practice can produce unwanted effects in people who might be more sensitive. We encourage anyone who is unsure about practising meditative techniques to seek appropriate professional support before experimenting with meditation.

Do I have to have psychic powers to be a witch?

Do I have to have psychic powers to be a witch?

Back in March we published an article on magick powers, in it we explained that there are four kinds of powers called ‘major clairs’. So let’s explain in a bit more detail what we mean by these powers, you may be able to identify one or two perhaps you are familiar with or maybe experience yourself. However, it is also fair to say that you do not have to have psychic powers to be a witch!

What are psychic powers?

A psychic is a person who has an ability to receive information outside of the normal five senses. It is said that this extra way of receiving information is through ‘extrasensory perception’. These different, extrasensory senses can be collectively referred to psychic powers or psychic abilities and are often  referred to as ‘the major clairs’.

Clairvoyance

Clairvoyance means ‘clear seeing’  is one of the four ‘clairs’. It means that when messages arrive ‘clairvoyantly’, they appear as images or scenes in the mind. They are nearly always experienced differently to thoughts, and they may come into the mind’s eye as quick as a flash and then it’s gone. In that case a clairvoyant may need to rely on powers of recall to bring the initial flash back.

Most people can and do experience clairvoyance at some point in their lives, they just don’t realise that is what it is. For example, images that flash in your mind incredibly quickly or images that come into the mind during deep relaxation (or even right before falling asleep) are all examples of clairvoyance. The hardest part is figuring out what the image means, which is oftentimes metaphorical.

Clairaudience

Clairaudience means ‘clear hearing’  and means that when messages arrive they are like a little voice or the conscience, gently speaking. The messages are not the same as having negative thoughts or our own internal critic. The messages are not scary, the phrases are not harsh or tormenting.

Many people can experience clairaudience, for example short words and phrases that flash in your mind incredibly quickly or that come into the mind during deep relaxation. This might be dismissed as our own internal voice.

Claircognizance

Claircognizance means “clear knowing”.  Which means the ability to know something without knowing why. Claircognizance is not simply remembering facts and it’s not a thought in the mind, it is experienced as “pure truth”. This sounds very complicated and claircognizance is possibly the hardest ‘clair’ to explain, but people who experience claircognizance are always correct in their assertions even when there is no evidence (or even contradictory evidence).

People who experience claircognizance will suddenly know something to be fundamentally true. Perhaps the location of a missing object, or when driving somewhere unfamiliar but they don’t get lost (using SatNav doesn’t count!) but they absolutely cannot explain how they know it. People with claircognizance often have the weirdest solutions to problems, but they’re always correct.

Clairsentience

Clairsentience means ‘clear feeling’. With this ‘clair’ messages come through as a feeling. These feelings could be emotional feelings, but they could manifest physically like when we feel nervous we get a physical feeling in the stomach.

Most people will experience clairsentience, but oftentimes it is labelled as something else. For example, a ‘gut feeling’ or ‘sensing the room’. It could feel unexplained, and it is different to feeling apprehension when an event is about to happen.  Clairsentience may also be stronger in people who are particularly empathic, we certainly believe empathy is a magickal power all of its own!

Isn’t this just poor health?

It is absolutely true that the symptoms of some health conditions manifest themselves in very similar ways as the major clairs. People who see things that aren’t there or people who hear voices can certainly be experiencing the above due to a health condition.

It is also true that if you experience any of the major clairs, it may not cause you any distress at all and there may be no worrying medical reasons for these experiences. For example, other explanations connected to hypnagogia may be used.

We would urge anyone who is worried or distressed about any symptoms to seek advice from a medical professional.

Developing the major clairs

With practice most people can develop all of these abilities; however you do not have to have psychic powers to be a witch!

If you’re able to practise meditation safely, visualising when in a deep state of relaxation is when ‘baby clairs’ start to form. This is a good time to notice if you get any visual imagery flashing in your mind’s eye.

Learning how to switch off your logic thinking brain is also a good start to developing the major clairs. Spend more time outdoors, building Lego or colouring in a picture book. Any task that allows the logic brain to have a break will allow creative, more intuitive, clairsentient and claircognizant solutions to come forward.

Just make sure you keep a good record by writing it down in a journal. Over several weeks or months, this record can begin to show how well these abilities are growing. Just be patient, learning anything new takes time!

You do not have to have psychic powers to be a witch

Witches are masters of manifestation. We set our intentions through spells and achieve our goals. Manifestation and goal achievement may not be a major clair but it is certainly a magickal power. People who successfully work towards their goals possess many gifts, and magickal powers doesn’t have to mean the psychic powers of the major clairs.

Guided Meditation: See It To Believe It

Art by Jemma

Visualisation is another way to describing “using the imagination”. How to visualise involves as many of your other senses and emotions as possible. This is what makes visualisation in magickal practice successful.

This visualisation is a starting point to practice this technique, using your own memory. If you can recall and manipulate your memories, you could use that skill to “recall” things that haven’t happened yet. This is the very essence of visualisation in magick.

Here we have some pointers on how to meditate, plus some of our other guided meditations available.

Meditation practice can produce unwanted effects in people who might be more sensitive. We encourage anyone who is unsure about practising meditative techniques to seek appropriate professional support before experimenting with meditation.

How to interpret the court cards

Can Tarot predict the future by Magenta School of Magick

Deck shown is the Rider Waite Smith Tarot published by US Games. Photo by Magenta

Everyone has their own way of reading the cards, so our way is not the only way to interpret the court cards in Tarot. In this article we explained that interpreting the minor arcana in Tarot is centred on the suit and numbers. So let’s tie these two things together by looking at the suits of the court cards in a bit more detail.

Getting started with Court Cards

Once upon a time, a common interpretation of court cards was that they represented people. Pages were thought to be young people. Kings were always a male figure in a querant’s life and so on. It’s not unfair to say that the relative characteristics of the court cards, when read as people, are prescriptive and not in the least diverse. This means if a strict interpretation of the court cards as people was relied upon, they’d only represent White Europeans and they’d lack female representation across the age and leadership ranges.

These days, thankfully, there is far less emphasis on interpreting court cards as people.  Instead, the court cards are simply read like any other card and by this we mean, we look at the role of the card’s character as they’d appear in a Royal Court and we look at the suit. By putting these things together, we get a broad interpretation.

It’s also worth pointing out that just like the rest of the minor arcana, the artwork will have a role to play in interpreting the court cards. Each one of the court cards are drawn differently, each King is doing something different and so is each Knight and so on. Looking at all of these aspects means we can interpret the court cards in a more holistic way.

So how do we interpret the court cards? Let’s explain. For ease of reference, we will be actively describing the art in Rider Waite Smith deck as a basis for interpreting the court cards. But you can extrapolate the method here for any other deck.

How to Interpret the Page Cards

The role of a page in the Royal Court was to act as a messenger. They were also learning about life, about their place in the world and beginning their career in the Royal Court. So thinking about pages and the role they play, one way to interpret these court cards is that the pages are about communication, about learning or being at the start of something.

Page of Wands

Wands cards are associated with ideas, creativity, action and self expression through enterprise. When we put the role of a page together with the interpretation of the suit, we could arrive at an interpretation such as communicating ideas, a new idea or learning or doing something creative.

Looking at the artwork, we see this page is just standing still. If we build that into the interpretation, this suggests that these new ideas might lack direction or a new creative venture hasn’t quite got off the blocks.

Page of Cups

Cups cards are associated with emotions, love, other people and the interplay between relationships. When we put the role of a page together with the interpretation of the suit, we could arrive at an interpretation such as communication in relationships or inexperience with a new relationship or with emotions.

The artwork suggests that this page is holding the cup with a random small fish inside. This page is just about ready for anything, if not a little playful. If we build that into the interpretation, this suggests that these new relationships could be exciting and fun or that communication in relationships might not be taken seriously.

Page of Swords

The Swords are cards associated with intellect, logic and seeing things as they really are. As the page card is oftentimes symbolic of communication, an interpretation of this card could be related to intellectual communication, presenting logical arguments, or the beginnings of learning a new skill.

The page in this card is swinging around his sword all over the place. Perhaps in practice. By building the artwork into the interpretation, it may indicate communication is a bit hit and miss or it may be an invitation to practise a new approach or way of thinking.

Page of Pentacles

The Pentacles are cards associated with material things, surroundings, wellbeing and all that can be gained. If we put this interpretation alongside the role of the page this card could mean the start of a new project, communication in the home, learning a new skill such as an apprenticeship or a new course.

Here the page in this card appears to be studying his coin, as if attempting to understand it. By building the artwork into the interpretation, it may indicate a project is only just starting to manifest rewards, or that small gains have been had in terms of communication or work.

How to Interpret the Knight Cards

The role of the Knight in the Royal Court was to be sent off in all directions across the land, carrying out various actions and orders on behalf of the court. So thinking about knights, and the role they play, one way to interpret these court cards is that they are about taking action and undertaking a certain amount of effort to achieve things.

Knight of Wands

As Wands cards are associated with ideas, creativity, action and self expression through enterprise. When we put the role of a Knight together with the interpretation of the suit, this card could be about putting ideas into action and stepping up the effort.

Looking at the artwork, we see the Knight and his horse are just about to go charging off. If we build that into the interpretation, this suggests that these new ideas need strong motivation or a new creative venture needs a burst of effort or energy.

Knight of Cups

The Cups are cards associated with emotions, love, other people and the interplay between relationships. When we put the role of a Knight together with the interpretation of the suit, this suggests that some effort or action is required in a relationship, that there is a certain amount of emotional effort or emotions feel like an effort.

The artwork suggests that this Knight is taking his time and the horse is almost gracefully moving forwards. If we build that into the interpretation, this suggests that some of these relationships or emotions might require a bit of grace, slow pace, charm or romance to move forwards.

Knight of Swords

As Swords cards are associated with intellect, logic and seeing things as they really are, an interpretation of this card could be related to intellectual actions and setting your mind on moving forwards.

The Knight in this card is charging the horse at full speed so by building the artwork into the interpretation, it may indicate moving at pace or an abundance of intellectual energy.

Knight of Pentacles

The Pentacles are cards associated with material things, surroundings, wellbeing and all that can be gained. If we put this interpretation alongside the role of the Knight, this card could mean actions required on a project, personal energy levels or the effort required to gain something.

Here the page in the Knight appears to be at a stand still. As if complemplating the next move. By building the artwork into the interpretation, it may indicate a project is at a bit of a stand still or needs a pause or perhaps energy levels are in decline somewhat on a piece of work.

How to Interpret the Queen Cards

The Queens were the shadow leaders in the Royal Court, if they weren’t leading themselves, in the absence of the King. So these next two court cards are all about leadership. The differences in gender between Queens and Kings are really about the style of leadership. Queens represent the feminine side, so this is all about soft skills in leadership and it may also mean solo leading and leading quietly in the background, acting as the solid foundation.

Queen of Wands

The Wands cards are associated with ideas, creativity, action and self expression through enterprise. When we put the role of a Queen together with the interpretation of the suit, this card is often about coming up with the ideas, taking personal ownership on a creative pursuit and solo entrepreneurship.

Looking at the artwork of the Queen of Wands she is looking up and looking around, engaging with her subjects. Building that into the interpretation of the suit, this suggests taking ownership head on for creative ideas, being unafraid and determined on a solo project.

Queen of Cups

We know Cups cards are associated with emotions, love, other people and the interplay between relationships. When we put the role of the Queen together with the interpretation of the suit, potential interpretations could be about empathic guidance in relationships, taking emotional or intuitive decisions.

This Queen is sitting quietly alone, watching her cup in her hands. The artwork suggests that she is quietly reflective, and away from the limelight. If we build that into the interpretation, this suggests that relationships may be looking for genteel, soft support or taking ownership of emotions is required.

Queen of Swords

Swords cards are associated with intellect, logic and seeing things as they really are. As the Queen card is symbolic of leadership, an interpretation of this card could be related to intellectual leadership and cutting through the noise to see things as they really are.

The Queen in this card has turned her throne to look to the left. Perhaps, engaging directly with an individual one on one. By building the artwork into the interpretation, it may indicate straight talking and thinking very intellectually will be the solid foundation or owning the problem head on is what is required.

Queen of Pentacles

The Pentacles are cards associated with material things, surroundings, wellbeing and all that can be gained. If we put this interpretation alongside the role of a Queen, this card could mean leading on a new project, being financially independent, teaching others or leading in terms of wellbeing.

In this card the Queen appears to be head down studying her coin, as if in gratitude for all she has achieved. By building the artwork into the interpretation, it may indicate efforts of a project are manifesting rewards, owning and being responsible for one’s own success.

How to Interpret the King Cards

The Kings of the Royal Court were all about leading their people, so this leadership role may involve other personalities or being part of a team or perhaps this is an aspect of your personality, so asking how you work with others. Kings also represent masculine leadership qualities, such as assertiveness and forthrightness.

King of Wands

We know Wands cards are associated with ideas, creativity, action and self expression through enterprise. When we put the role of the King together with the interpretation of the suit, this card could be about directing others into action, mentoring others, facilitating the creative ideas of the group.

Looking at the artwork, we see the King of Wands appears to be just about to rise out of the throne. If we build that into the interpretation this suggests some hands-on leadership on a creative venture or having created the vision, being on the edge of your seat to take the next step.

King of Cups

Cups cards associated with emotions, love, other people and the interplay between relationships. When we put the role of a King together with the interpretation of the suit, this suggests some mastery in navigating relationships or achieving ownership over one’s own emotions.

This King is taking his time to listen to his subjects. He is looking around, open and approachable. If we build that into the interpretation, this suggests the role of a counsellor or a mentor, and being open to guidance from others.

King of Swords

The Swords cards are associated with intellect, logic and seeing things as they really are, when coupled with the role of the King, an interpretation of this card could be related to intellectual leadership and taking responsibility for issues and working with others to resolve problems.

The artwork in this card is that of a King facing his subjects, holding their attention and he stands ready to answer any questions. His sword raised as if to defend anyone who needs it. Adding this to the interpretation may indicate a level of subject matter authority or expertise, an ability to lead and command a certain amount of respect in doing so.

King of Pentacles

Pentacles are the cards primarily associated with material things, surroundings, wellbeing and all that can be gained. If we put this interpretation alongside the role of the King, this card could mean ambition being realised, successful projects may now require a team to help, financial abundance and mentoring others.

In this card the King appears to be surrounded by the fruits of his hard work, he looks out at his subjects and appears to share in the wealth. By building the artwork into the interpretation, it may indicate teamwork creating successful outcomes, owning one’s own success and being in a position to generate success from others.

How to interpret court cards in any spread

So you see by not falling into the trap of interpreting court cards as people, these simple interpretations can apply in any spread and any position. By looking at the suit we get the ballpark situation and role the character has in a Royal Court acts as the next layer, much like when reading the other numbered suits cards. By really concentrating on these aspects, and not worrying about court cards as people we know, we can interpret the court cards in a much more meaningful way.
