How to get started with magick

Are you curious about magick and the potential it holds for manifesting your goals? Magick is becoming increasingly popular among modern practitioners, spiritual leaning people and even business executives who are looking to make lasting changes in their lives. So if you’re ready to get started, let’s just go through the basics.

What is magick?

Magick is the art of creating change through intention and action, this means it is not like Hollywood where things manifest instantly and (sadly!) it isn’t a substitute for hard work.

We believe that magick is the philosophy and art of affecting intended change through unseen causes and that magick can be used in all aspects of your life, from achieving your career goals to improving your relationships with loved ones. The “art” behind magick can be as simple as lighting a candle and setting an intention for what you would like to manifest, or it can be as complex as performing a full ritual. The “philosophy” bit is also worth spending some time on, what is it you actually believe? What is it you’re trying to achieve? You’ll soon spot that oftentimes it’s all down to personal preference.

Getting started with magick

We posted an article about definitions in magick that gives some of the basics about various words that are used to describe magickal practise or magickal objects.

We mentioned earlier that you might want to bring in a central philosophy to your new lifestyle. It’s not the case that all magick is Wicca or Paganism (or any other magick based religion). Magick can form part of a religious practice, but it doesn’t have to. Deities can be called upon and worshipped, or not. It’s up to you. There is no one right way, which can make things incredibly freeing (but it can also be incredibly confusing when you’re just starting out!)

This means there are lots of different practices out there and lots of different types of practitioners. Some you’ll notice align quite nicely with your central belief system, eg your philosophy, and some less so. The same goes for the “art” behind the magick you practise. Our magick is very astral based, so the “art” behind our magick means working with planets and star signs. This isn’t for everybody though, and that’s fine. It’s all down to personal preference.

Which brings us onto the next key place to getting started with magick…research!

Researching magick

If you’re new to magick, it’s so important to do your research, so you can make an informed decision on the type of magick you want to practise. By the way, it’s ok to change your mind and pick a different one later!

We say this because not all magickal practise is open to just anyone. And that is a good thing (we have an article about being a keymaster if you’re keen to learn about this. It’s a whole thing). So research is so important before practising.

One way to research magick is to explore different blogs, books, and websites. So we’re happy that you’ve found your way here, just make sure you’re reading up on those different types of magick, so you can see which one resonates with you the most.

You can also explore different groups on social media, such as Facebook groups and Discord channels, where you can talk to people who are already practising magick. Just take care out there, of course. The Internet is a weird place sometimes!

When are you officially a magickal practitioner?

Well, we’d suggest this is once you’ve identified which type of magick is right for you and you’ve started your research. Telling people about your new practise is also a personal choice. We have some tips on keeping things on the DL if you’re not ready.

But if you do want to be more open about it, you can certainly feel more like a magickal practitioner by creating your magick space. This can be any special place where you practise your magick. It might be a whole room in your house or just a corner of one room. Perhaps it’s a virtual space. It’s entirely up to you.

You absolutely do not need to spend money on making a space look magickal. We’d suggest you really only need four things when getting started with magick. These can all be boiled down into a positive mindset and a sense of ownership and belief in what you are doing (eg how your art and your philosophy are used to deliver your outcomes).

Which brings us on to how you can feel that sense of ownership.

Practising magick regularly and remain open

We mentioned before that magick is not a substitute for doing the work and nor does it happen in a quick or easy manner. It is a practise that requires patience, perseverance, and dedication.

It’s important to remember that magick is a two-way street, meaning that while you are working towards manifesting your goals, the Universe (or insert your own source of power here!) is also working to bring those goals to fruition. This means that patience and consistency are crucial if we want  to bring about successful results.

It can be easy to get frustrated and discouraged when you first start practising magick, as it often takes time to see results. Just remember, patience is key. It’s important to remain open to receiving the outcomes you desire, even if they do not happen in the way you expect. In fact, we’d go so far as to say don’t worry about “how” the thing will get here. If you’ve been practising magick for a while and have yet to see results, you may have accidentally set up a barrier by worrying about the “how” that could be blocking your results.

Finding a mentor or community

Finally to get started with magick you can also invest in some training. Naturally, we’d love it if you wanted us to teach you about astral magick but there are other types of magick, and other schools.

If you want to take your chosen practice to the next level and master the art of magick, it can be helpful to find a mentor, teacher or even just a community of like minded magickal people that can guide you along the way. Just make sure you find a teacher or group that aligns with your goals and your philosophy.

What is Imbolc? 3 ways to celebrate this February

In the Northern Hemisphere, the beginning of February marks the arrival of spring and the transition from darkness to light. For those south of the Equator, it is a time of harvest and celebration.  Both can be a time to celebrate with music, dancing, and storytelling. Here’s a guide to some of the ways to honour this special occasion. From feasts and festivals to storytelling and tarot, you’ll be able to find the perfect way to mark this fire festival, and make it a memorable and meaningful day.

Mark the changing of the seasons

For those of us still in the grip of winter, Wiccans call this time of year “Imbolc”. It is also a celtic festival honouring St Brigid. Which is one of Ireland’s oldest holidays. For many, this festival marks the end of the winter and marks the first signs of spring. It is generally a time for purification and a celebration of the first signs of life after the winter. It is a good time of year for observing the first green shoots from the earth.

For those of us enjoying the summer, this time of year is Lammas or Lughnassadh. This festival marks the first celebration of the harvest, the growth that has happened to this point and a reminder to enjoy the remaining warmth and light before the next equinox.

As the Wheel of the Year turns, we can mark this point in time by celebrating and feasting. The beginning of February is a good time of year for enjoying the fruits of nature, and celebrating the light.

Celebrate with food and feasting

Feasting is a great way to celebrate this time of year, perhaps something connected to the season. You could try foods that are part of your traditions, perhaps researching your family history and making a meal that you haven’t had for a while.

You can of course reach out and connect with friends and family. Especially if it has been a while since you got together. Which brings us onto sharing stories with friends and family.

With feasting should come music and dancing! It is common to hear music and see dancing at traditional celebrations. For example, for those celebrating St Brigid’s Day at this time of year, it is believed that the music of harps, flutes, and pipes are the sounds of the goddess Brigid visiting her people.

Storytelling and poetry

Storytelling is a great way to bring people together and enjoy each other’s company. Wiccans call this time of year a fire festival, which is a perfect place to gather as a group to tell each other stories of old, funny stories or even to just read stories written by other people. You don’t even have to have people over. It’s still ok to meet via social media. The objective is just to bring people together.

The Sun in Aquarius

Even if you’re not into traditional celebrations, it’s worth noticing that the Sun is busy making its journey through Aquarius at this time of year. Aquarius symbolises renewal and shaking things up a bit. As the Wheel of the Year turns, this might be an opportune time to check in on your goals and intentions for the year.

Are you still on track or do you need to shake things up a bit?

It’s perfectly fine to chuck those resolutions in the bin and start again with the Sun in Aquarius. Try a New Year Tarot Reading. Spend some time reflecting and refocusing on what you set for yourself.

You can also create a vision board for your intentions to keep an eye on your progress and any actions you need to take through the coming months.

Wherever you are on the planet, this time of year is a special occasion. It either marks the beginning of spring and the coming of warmth, or it salutes the Sun and gives thanks for the food. It is a festival that can be enjoyed in many different ways. So go ahead, have another serving of dinner. It’s all in honour of the season!

Guided Meditation: Understanding self esteem

Looking to the past can be a helpful way to gather information about the present. How we view ourselves, our self esteem and our self worth could have been formed in our childhoods. Understanding how far our interpretations of events and assumptions we make as children has formed our adult lives is the first step to challenging any beliefs that are holding us back today.

Here we have some pointers on how to meditate, plus some of our other guided meditations available.

Unlock your intuition and get creative with problem solving

We all have an inner source of wisdom, a voice that speaks to us from the depths of our being. It is our intuition, and it can reveal a world of insight for creative problem solving and creative solutions. Unlocking this power can seem difficult but honestly, with practise, it is absolutely possible! In this article, we will explore the power of intuition and how to unlock it through creative solutions.

What is intuition?

Intuition is a powerful force, or feeling, that resides within all of us. It is our inner guidance system, a source of wisdom that often goes unrecognised at best or just simply ignored. But when we learn to tap into this power, we can access a world of insight and creative solutions that can help us make the right decisions. But what is it?

Intuition is a form of non-linear thinking that allows us to see the bigger picture beyond the obvious. It is an inner knowing that somehow goes beyond all the things we have learned, and yet taps into everything we have ever learned in an instant. Intuition can help us make decisions that are aligned with our true self and our goals. Some may say it is a way to tap into the collective unconscious and access universal truths. At it’s very core it is that gut feeling we get when we just ‘know’

Benefits of unlocking your intuition

When you tap into your intuition, you can access a deeper level of understanding and insight. You can gain clarity and understanding of your life and decisions, and you can access creative solutions that would not have been available to you otherwise.

Intuition can also help you access your inner power and strength and by unlocking your intuition you can build a stronger connection to yourself and the world around you. When you access your inner wisdom, you can gain a greater understanding of yourself, your relationships, and your role in the world.

Opening yourself up to the gentle nudges of inspiration that come from your intuition can give you better answers to your questions. It can give you more meaningful and creative solutions to problems. In a nutshell, you’ll be thinking outside the box but that’s where the best solutions come from.

How to unlock your intuition

Developing your intuition is a process that takes time and practise. It is a journey of exploration and discovery but it is entirely possible. Nobody has to be born psychic to access their intuition. Here are some tips to help you unlock your intuition and tap into your inner wisdom

Practise meditation if you can. Meditation has loads of benefits and is a kind of quiet practise where a certain amount of time and effort is dedicated in order to pay special and very close attention to a meditation object. When you learn to focus and pay close attention, you can access your intuition more easily. This is because intuition is a very quiet voice in the crowded noise of ego and attitude. You got to listen out for it.

Spend time in nature. We have a whole module in our Magick Discovered course dedicated to the powerful healing effects of nature. It is the combination of being outside and moving about that gives your logic brain a break. So spending time in nature to quiet your mind, helps you to access your inner wisdom. Especially if you’re a physical person who prefers movement to sitting in quiet meditation.

Simply say yes and be open. Start by being open to the possibility that intuition can be a powerful source of insight and creative solutions. Things like listening to your gut, to your instincts or taking a leap of faith without doing the hours of research first. Paying attention to any signs, coincidences and your own feelings allows you to become open to your intuition. Rewarding your gut feelings through paying them attention will mean they’re easier to come through next time.

Unlock your intuition and get creative with problem solving

Once you have developed your intuition and accessed your inner wisdom, you can begin to unlock creative solutions. Creative solutions are often born out of our intuition, and they can be powerful tools for problem-solving and decision-making. Of course, creative solutions come in many forms and there’s no definitive list! For example, they can take the form of an entirely new idea if you’re stuck. They can come in the form of a different way of approaching a problem. But creative solutions often have problem solving, decision making or methods for finding new opportunities at their core.

Brainstorm by asking questions: Brainstorming is a great way to access creative solutions and start your solution session with a question. Then clear the mind and listen to intuitive answers. This can welcome different approaches and explore different possibilities.

Creative visualisation: Creative visualisation is a powerful tool for accessing your intuition. Visualise the outcome you want to create, keep in your mind’s eye the outcome and allow the answer for how to get there to come.

Journal: Journaling is a great way to access your intuition. Take time to free-write your questions, thoughts and feelings. Write about different approaches and ideas. Taking time to explore and experiment through writing can access insight and creative solutions.

Tarot and Lenormand for creative thinking: Tarot and lenormand cards are both powerful tools for accessing your intuition. Take some time to explore your inner world and see what new ideas and approaches the cards have to solve the problem.

Drawing: Art is a very expressive method to access your intuition. It doesn’t have to be great art, just spend time with your art tools to see what forms out of the shapes and colours. Have the problem in the front of your mind and experiment.

Things to remember in order unlock your intuition for creative problem solving

Intuition is a powerful force that resides within all of us. It is a source of wisdom and insight that we all have access to, so it isn’t a magickal gift that only a lucky few can tap into. Once it is unlocked, our intuition can be a powerful way to access insight in order to generate creative solutions to difficult problems.

Just remember to listen out for your intuition and pay attention to the insight it reveals. Trust that your intuition has your back and be open to the possibilities. Then explore those possibilities, and remain open to thinking outside the box to explore different approaches to solve the problem. Then of course, put your creative solutions into action and see what happens.

Finding inner peace through Humanistic Magick

Art by Jemma

Inner peace. What even is it?

Let’s just explore what inner peace is for a hot minute. For us, inner peace is a state of being. An outlook. A perspective on life. One that is generally positive and comes with an added upgrade of feeling balanced.

That sounds nice. How can I get some?! The search for inner peace is a journey that many of us embark on. It is a journey that takes time and a lot of effort, but it is one that can be well worth the effort. There are many paths that one can take to achieve inner peace. Some people find time out from the everyday grind helps. Others find a spirituality (like magickal practise for example)  a source of inner peace. Some prefer to do the sciencey thing of psychotherapy and counselling.

In this week’s article, we’ll explore how certainly the spiritual and the science thing do not have to be mutually exclusive in order to reach inner peace.

What is counselling?

Counselling is a type of therapy that can sometimes focus on an individual’s personal growth and development. Sometimes it can be a form of treatment in response to mental ill-health, but not always. Many models of behaviour, and other tools used by counsellors to guide their clients to wellness, have made their way into business coaching and life coaching.

We have trained in Humanistic Counselling. This is a kind of counselling that looks at the person as a whole and tries to understand their feelings, thoughts, and behaviours. Humanistic counselling can also look at the individual’s past experiences and how they may be affecting their life currently. The goal of humanistic counselling is to provide the individual with an understanding of themselves, the world around them and to help them find meaning and purpose in life. We use our experience and training in a coaching sense.

What is magick?

Now isn’t that the million dollar question!

Magick can be thought of as a form of spiritual practise. It is a concept that has been around for centuries. For us, magick is the ‘philosophy and art of affecting intended change through an unseen cause’. For us, it is something that focuses on manifesting intended change, which could include one’s desires. Certainly for us, we believe that our thoughts and intentions are powerful, and that they can be used in combination with rituals, to manifest one’s desires. Including unlocking inner peace and wellbeing.

How to incorporate magick into your life

If you’re new to magick (firstly, hello!) incorporating magick into your life can feel like a battle to understand what is the right way. We promise, it is not as difficult as it may first appear. The first step is to understand how to get going with the basics. Then build on that knowledge with a few principles of the type of magick that appeals and how it works. But honestly, once you understand the basics, you can start to incorporate it into your life by creating all sorts of rituals and spells. Creating rituals and spells is a personal expression of the magick, and there is no “right” or “wrong” way to do it. It is important to find a method that works for you, and to make sure that you are comfortable with what you are doing.

Combining Humanistic Counselling approaches and magick

We mentioned earlier that the goal of Humanistic Counselling is to provide the individual with an understanding of themselves, the world around them and to help them find meaning and purpose in life. It does this through the belief individuals have the power to make their own choices, and that their decisions should be based on their own personal values and beliefs. It is also based on the belief that individuals are capable of making meaningful and positive changes in their lives, such as building self-esteem, self-awareness, and self-compassion.

Combining methods found in humanistic counselling and magick can be a powerful way to unlock inner peace and wellbeing. Our flavour of magick tries to do this. By combining the two, we believe we have created a powerful foundation for personal growth and development through magickal expression. For example, tools found in humanistic counselling (such as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs) can provide understanding and insight that can be used to make meaningful and positive changes. Magick can provide the creative outlet and focused intention needed to manifest desires and goals.

Ultimately, this combination of a humanistic practise within magick can help you to create a positive and empowering mindset that will help you to manifest your desires.

The practice of Humanistic Magick at work

There are many different ways to combine a humanistic approach with magick. For example, meditation is a powerful tool to clear the mind and to focus on inner thoughts and feelings. It is also a great way to connect with your inner self and to gain insight into the underlying causes of any particular issues. We share regular meditations with our subscribers, which are a combination of mindfulness, visualisations, and affirmations. So they are all designed to reinforce positive thinking and to create a positive and empowering mindset. Perfect for creating the right mental space for successful magickal practise.

Our Humanistic Magick approach also makes proactive use of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. We overlayed the colours of the spectrum over the pyramid structure attributed to Maslow. We find this model is a useful framework to visually connect wants and needs with magick. For example, practising magick in support of things like ‘esteem needs’ (which might be a confidence spell) and ‘cognitive needs’ (which might be a spell to learn a new skill).

Right at the top of the pyramid is something called ‘transcendence’. This is the place where inner peace can be found.

Finding inner peace through Humanistic Magick

Finding inner peace through humanistic magick is rewarding, but does require dedication and commitment. We’re not claiming to have achieved transcendence (yet!) but we’re here to share some steps that we take, to speed things up a bit for you.

Get clear on your goals: Before beginning the journey to inner peace, it is important to get clear on your goals. These can be big goals for life, or just a series of little goals that form small pieces of the picture. But the questions are the same. Knowing a) what you want to achieve and b) what the outcome you are looking for is, are super important.

Finding someone you can work with: This might be another magickal practitioner, but could equally be a tarot reader or even a counsellor who practises Humanistic or Person-Centred Counselling. It’s about finding someone who you feel comfortable with and who you can trust. Someone who can provide some advice and guidance along the way, as you climb up through Maslow’s Hierarchy.

Create a consistent practice: Creating a philosophy and art through which you engage in rituals and spells will help you to reach those clear goals. Consistency is key when it comes to reaching inner peace. It is important to stay consistent with your practice and to keep pushing yourself to reach your goals.

Celebrate your successes: Don’t forget to celebrate your successes along the way. Keeping a record of what is working for you is one way to keep success at the front of your mind. Celebrating success is another important way to stay motivated and to keep pushing forward.

Reaching inner peace is a journey that takes time and effort, but it is one that is well worth the effort. Combining humanistic approaches and magick into Humanistic Magick can be a powerful way to unlock inner peace and wellbeing. By following these steps, you can begin your journey to inner peace and start living a life of joy and fulfilment.
