Magick has long been associated with mysticism and all things ‘woo’, but its potential to bring about mental wellbeing and stress relief is often overlooked. By understanding how to use magick in a practical way, you can access a powerful tool to improve your mental health and reduce stress through building a positive mindset. All it takes is a bit of knowledge, practise and the willingness to believe in yourself. This week we are looking at how you can use magick to open the door to a world of mental wellbeing and stress relief.
What is magick and how does it work?
For us, magick is “the philosophy and art of affecting intended change through unseen causes” which is all about using energy, intention and belief to create positive change in your life. Magick is certainly practised in many different ways. We like to follow the rules of astral magick to support our philosophy of humanistic magick. However, other kinds of magick use specific tools, like crystals and some kinds of magick prefer to work more intuitively, without any set rules per se. Whether you prefer working with an agreed set of rules or intuitively, we firmly believe the main ingredient for successful magick is you.
The importance of magick and belief
For a lot of magickal practitioners, spell work is based around the idea that what you focus on and what you ‘conjure’ will come to you. This starts with you, the practitioner, and what you believe will happen as a result of spell casting. It can be said that what you put out into the world is what you get back, so if you want to improve your life, you need to focus on what you want, not what you don’t want. We like to think of magick and spell casting as part of the process to prepare the unconscious to get it to work towards some kind of goal. And to do that we build in a ritual, and we say some words in order to condition our unconscious mind to get to work on bringing in all those constructive changes. Believing it will happen is a central tenet, and this is linked to having a positive mindset.
But which comes first? Magick for wellbeing or wellbeing for magick? Actually, for us, they’re both part of the A frame and why we provide both spells and meditations for free to our subscribers.
Benefits of using magick for mental wellbeing and stress relief
Thankfully, our magick is supported by a lot of meditations to create a positive mindset from the get go. As with most things in life, staying positive through all the challenges we experience is difficult at the best of times. So as part of our humanistic approach, we share lots of positive affirmations and visualisations to create new habits around positive thinking and break old, negative thinking habits.
This is then built upon through magickal practise to help you reinforce these positive thoughts and create the positive mindset you need to attract positive things into your life.
There are certainly many benefits that come with using magick to improve your mental health, possibly the main one being a sense of control. With the magickal practitioner in the driving seat, it can give back some sense of control in what can oftentimes feel like an out of control situation. Planning a ritual, writing out the words and gathering the ingredients together is a place to start to feel like you can own some of what is going on. Even if you can’t control everything that is going on, you can at least try to control your own response to the world. This includes how you might find a way to relax through magick, or create some space for yourself to improve your outlook.
How to use magick for mental wellbeing
It’s important to remember that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to magick. To use magick for your mental wellbeing, you’ll need to find out what works best for you. For us it’s astral magick and we share a lot of different spells and rituals you can use that use planetary correspondences in spell work. The important thing is to try and find the best way for you and how you practise magick. And remember, if at any point you start to feel worried about your wellbeing, it’s time to seek help from the medical professionals!
How to use magick for stress relief and relaxation
Relaxation is one of the most effective ways to reduce stress and improve your mental health. By using magick, you can create a relaxed environment and calm your mind. Many of the spells we share on Mondays can be used as part of our Friday meditations and vice versa. For example, visualisation is a powerful tool that can help you focus on the positive, reduce your stress and bring clarity to your thoughts. Often our visualisations invite you to create a positive mental image that you can use as part of the exercise. This becomes a skill that can be applied to spell work and you can use visualisation both before and during a spell. When you visualise your desired outcome, you’re sending a clear message to your mind, body and soul that you want a certain outcome. This is just as true if the outcome you’d like is to understand and reduce your stress levels. A lot of our spells are invitations to the mind, body and soul to reduce stress and help us relax a little more.
How to use magick for positive thinking
One of the best ways to use magick for positive thinking is to create a positive space for yourself. You can do this by doing a cleansing ritual (and one that involves actual cleaning by the way!) and casting a spell for a calming and relaxing atmosphere. You may also choose to add a protective charm over the doorway to keep out any negative thoughts and emotions. This can help you avoid any outside influences that might prevent you from thinking positively. You can always combine your magick with positive affirmations. These can be something you say in your head, or you can write them down and put them somewhere you’ll see them regularly. By working on creating positive thoughts, you can remove yourself from the cycle of negative thoughts that are preventing you from improving your wellbeing.
How to use magick for clarity and focus
If you find you are experiencing a lack of clarity and focus, you can try using magick to clear your mind and bring clarity to your thoughts. This may involve visualisation and meditation, certainly Mindfulness can help you focus on one small thing. It may also involve using Tarot cards to understand any lingering issues.
Spell work is of course great for providing some dedicated time to looking at the issues, providing some clarity and focus. For example as part of our rules for magick, we would work while the Moon is in Virgo to bring awareness to how the finer details are manifesting. Perhaps this is around obsessive thoughts or perhaps there are too many disordered thoughts. The general sense is to try and cast a healing or releasing spell to move past this situation.
Whether you want to improve your wellbeing or experience a positive change in your life, you need to focus on what you want and why you want it. If you’re experiencing mental health issues, negative thoughts and feelings may be clouding your thinking, preventing you from seeing solutions and creating positive change in your life. By using magick, you can break the cycle of negative thoughts and replace them with positive thoughts and feelings. This can help you experience an improvement in your wellbeing and help you lead a happier, healthier life.
